Due to the current economic climate, GLOBE Dubai
has been postponed. Please check back in a couple of months
for updates.
The GLOBE Foundation has announced plans for GLOBE
Middle East, to be held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
This comes on the heels of the 10th biennial gathering
of the world's leading experts on the business of the environment,
GLOBE 2008, which hosted over 11,000 participants in Vancouver this
past Spring. One of the many topics addressed at the conference was
green investment in the Gulf, a precursor of what's to come at
GLOBE Middle East. "With the increased interest in
the Middle East in issues of sustainability and environmental
stewardship, it is the right time to take GLOBE to this dynamic
part of the world," says GLOBE Foundation President and CEO John
Wiebe.
Since its inception in 1990, the GLOBE Series has helped to
change corporate attitudes regarding environmental protection and
sustainable development. In North America, the corporate mindset
has evolved from reluctant acceptance of environmental stewardship
obligations and the adoption of more sustainable business practices
to one where businesses now embrace these principles and are
profiting from doing so.
"We will be operating in partnership with an internationally
respected Dubai corporation to bring the GLOBE concept and brand to
this region," says John Wiebe. From green cities to green
investments, the Middle East is becoming a hotbed for green
initiatives. Abu Dhabi has announced $15 billion in new green
investments aimed at making Abu Dhabi a leader in the field of
sustainability. Dubai is driving forward green building projects
and wants to be the 'green business capital' of the Gulf. Saudi
Arabia is also investing in green technologies and urban
developments. Major carbon capture and storage projects are in the
works as are alternative energy projects including plans for major
solar developments in Abu Dhabi and Qatar. Leaders in the region
have committed themselves to developing a more sustainable
future.
